June 8th: Coober Pedy

Coober Pedy The green on Coober Pedy Golf course Coober Pedy is a very dusty town. The only vegetation is found on the soccer field. Even the green on the golf course is not remotely green. Everything is dust dust dust. In the mornings at the hostel you could hear people cough and I am sure that it was not smokers cough. Days after leaving the city, the dust was still in our throats - and we visited Coober Pedy in winter - summer is worse!

Well, there is more to Coober Pedy than dust - a lot of junk for a start. It is a very interesting place to spend some time. Especially all the dugouts and the opal fields. In the morning we went to see the "Old Timers Mine" which was the first opal mines in the Coober Pedy area and is now made into a very interesting museum where you walk (Linda) or crawl (Klaus) through the tunnels.
And what exactly is that dog guarding?! Dougout kitchen Old Timers Mine

Dugout church In the afternoon we went on a tour with Radeka's. We must have seen everything of interest in the area Noodling for opals - in the end everybody was so tired that nobody wanted to get off the bus when it made a stop - but it was certainly interesting. We saw the minefields and a dugout church. We went noodling for opals (Klaus found one with a tiny bit of colour), we visited Crocodile Harry in his home which have been used in several movies (Mad Max III & Ground Zero) and finally we went to see the dog fence and the Moon Plain (also used in several movies like Planet Mars, Priscilla - Queen of the desert, and Pitch Black - will also be used in the second episode of Starwars).
