June 22nd: Melbourne
Rainbow in the last sunlight It was past noon when we finally got in to Melbourne. The weather was rainy, gray and miserable.

The City Circle, a free tram around the border of the inner city, was not very interesting. We had hoped for a bit of a sightseeing tour with some information about the various places as we passed them, but the loudspeaker stayed quiet.

After reading e-mail in an internet cafe, we walked up Collins Street to take a look at the "old" buildings, but were not particularly impressed (maybe the weather had an influence - furthermore, as Europeans we do not consider a building old when it is younger than 500 years, which naturally is pretty hard to find on this continent ;-).

The view from the Rialto tower panorama deck was stunning. The Rialto ...and darker Getting darker... Towers belong to the club of tallest buildings in the world. The weather had cleared a fair bit, and the first thing we saw getting out of the lift was a rainbow in the last sunlight. We stayed up there for an hour while it got dark and watched the city lights being turned on one after the other. The hourly fire show outside the Crown entertainment complex is really something. This time we watched it from above.
Hourly fire show at the Crown omplex We were a bit impressed of the panorama deck. First of all there are binoculars, as there would be on any panoramic view point, but here they are free (except that you pay $7.50 to get up the tower, of course). Even better - there are computers which are directly connected to outdoor cameras that you control to get a live picture of the surroundings. Klaus was trying hard but couldn't spot anybody doing anything they shouldn't do in their office in the adjacent buildings :-). The computer can also give you a guided tour - at no extra cost!

That night Kerrie cooked a fantastic dinner for us (we'll never forget that chocolate cake!) and we had a nice evening together.
