July 6th: Port Macquarie to Byron Bay
About 15 minutes flight from Port Macquarie lies Rex's airfield. Initially, we wanted to give Rex (the other guy we met at Leigh Creek and a friend of Ricki and Bee) a visit, but because of our relatively heavy plane we would probably have had some difficulties taking off again. Instead, we orbited his airfield, seeing a tiny red dot outside Rex's house - presumably Rex :-).

Right next to Rex's home you can find a really beautiful lighthouse. Sitting on the top of a cliff its surroundings are postcard-perfect.

Our goal today: Byron Bay. Shortly after arriving at the Tyagarah airstrip, we were picked up by the Aquarius Backpacker bus that drove us to their HQ in Byron Bay. It's a nice hostel that provides all necessities and is close to the beach and downtown.

Sand dragon

At the beach a dragon greeted us. A guy was in the middle of finishing a "sand castle" formed as a dragon from a fantasy novel. Skillfully erected by use of sand, water and imagination.

Surfers Further down the beach we saw a lot of surfer-dudes - the predominant population of Byron Bay, we Byron_Bay_sunset think ;-).

The sunset was gorgeous! The red clouds were reflected in the water and produced a breathtaking view. After dark, the nearby lighthouse entertained us for a while - it reminded us very much of the introduction to "Castle Rock" movies ;-)
